S&M: sushi and masochism
Last week Matt mentioned how much he missed shopping with me at the St Lawrence Market on a Saturday morning to pick up some special ingredients for our evening dinner date. I miss it too. Mostly the St Lawrence Market. The Saturday homemade dinners have been a mainstay, but have lost some magic without the market trip. Freshco just doesn’t emit the same romance.
I thought that I’d get Matt excited about our Saturday dinner by suggesting we make sushi, something we have never done together. I had found an unopened sushi-making kit under a layer of dust while cleaning the basement and suggested that we finally put it to use.
So after picking up some sushi rice and nori that had been left behind at my dad’s house and getting some wasabi (or wasabi-flavoured horseradish substance) and pickled ginger from the grocery store we set out to make sushi.
Actually, it ended up being me that made the rice, cooked the veggies, and rolled the sushi while Matt intermittently wielded his knife skills to cut the rolls and simultaneously searched music videos on YouTube. So it goes.
Matt failed to mention to me that he has an aversion to wasabi. I had no idea. I also had no idea how difficult it was to spread a small amount of wasabi on the sushi rice. And as such, I ended up making maki for masochists. It might have been the most painful sushi experience I’ve ever had, and I like wasabi; for Matt it was even worse. Our dinner became the culinary equivalent of Russian roulette, and we started picking our pieces strategically—scrutinizing the ingredients to see how much of the lethal green stuff we could expect from that bite.
I felt terrible that I had royally fucked up our dinner so I made up for it by making Matt’s favourite– cinnamon rolls. I’m trying to find a perfect recipe that meets my high cinnamon bun standards. The result ended up being just “OK”.
So much for redemption.

Have you tried The Pioneer’s Woman cinnamon bun recipe? It’s crazy easy and practically fool proof!
I LOVE sushi, but I haven’t had it in so long. I can’t find any place that serves good vegetarian sushi near me! I would make it myself, but it looks too hard
Yours looks beautiful though! Even if it was covered in wasabi
LOL, oh no. “Like Russian roulette” — That’s funny! I never heard of putting wasabi in the rice, but then again, I’m not well-versed in sushi. I probably eat it as un-Japanese as possible; with all American ingredients, like avocado and cream cheese and cooked shellfish/veggies, lol.
Don’t feel bad! Next time you make sushi you’ll never do that again. And they look beautiful
I had to laugh at Matt’s face as he tentatively lifts the sushi to his mouth (kudos for using chopsticks with pizzaz!). Don’t feel bad! I remember I left the sugar out of a batch of homemade molten chocolate cakes once (they were awful). Besides, it’s the dinner date that counts, right?
True. But’s it’s always disappointing when you want to do something nice for someone and it ends up being a flop.
Sorry to hear about the mishap! It looks delicious though! My friend said sushi is fairly easy to make! I’ve never actually been to a sushi restaurant so I want to try that attempt first!
Awwww, sad! I just had the brilliant idea to want to try sushi at home. I will remember this when trying my hand at wasabi spreading!! Were the rolls are the make/cut??
I love wasabi, but it looks like you went a little bit far … oh well, at least it made for a great blog title!
I tried making sushi years ago and it was a fail. Yours looks good!
If I were making cinnamon rolls, I’d use this recipe – http://www.joythebaker.com/blog/2008/03/just-a-tease/
I adapted her healthy banana bread recipe to gluten-free and it was great. She’s known around the web for making amazing baked goods.
what a total bummer! sucks when your hard work doesn’t pay off the way you’d like. at least you tried
.
Aww sorry about the wasabi disaster! I love wasabi but I can’t take too much of it. I have a sushi kit at home and I love making it with my bf, he’s gotten good at rolling them
We spread a tiny bit of wasabi on the nori sheet
Genius! Here I am trying to spread it on the rice (which is impossible) whenyou’re supposed to spread it on the nori! You’ve changed my life.
