World Vegan Day

November 1st is World Vegan Day to kick off World Vegan Month! Can you can commit yourself to eating vegan for just one meal? Great! The whole day? Awesome! The month of November? AMAZING!

Eating vegan means sticking to a diet based on legumes, grains, fruits, and vegetables. It means avoiding animals and fish protein as well as eggs and dairy. A vegan diet is 100% plant-based and free from all animal products.

Many vegans site the lack of ethical treatment of food animals in modern factory farming practices as the primary reason for going vegan (you can read more about that here). Health and environmental sustainability related to a vegan diet are other reasons for adopting this lifestyle.

So try cooking vegan today!

  • though i am not a vegan, i can understand its appeal. 1 trip to the slaughterhouse as an adult did it for me. i am all for the ethical treatment of livestock. butchery needs to be held in proper perspective.

plus, it would cut down on the emissions of co2 out the mouth. livestock produces more greenhouse gases than transportation in total.

thanks for the recipe bank. my meatless monday ideas have more to choose from

  • WOW, great recipes & info!!! Thanks so much for posting

  • I would eat vegan today, but I am having a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch and a burger for dinner. Sorry ;)

  • I do eat vegan for breakfast MOST days though for breakfast and lunch, so give me some credit ;)

  • This was an inspiring post, could I eat vegan for a meal? I think so, but a whole month would be hard for a cheese lover like me :D

  • I usually eat vegetarian (or close to — perhaps the use of some organic chicken stock in a soup), but failed today (made sausage, sweet potato and spinach soup with some sausage I had in the freezer.)

Vegan food can be great, though. Hummus is vegan and my favourite.

  • I had no idea it was World Vegan Day! What a coincidence – I ate all vegan today too. I love it when that kind of stuff happens;)

P.S. That picture of the cow is so dang sweet!

  • While I’m not against Vegans, I don’t think it is necessary to be vegan. I know a lot of people who go vegan for the wrong reasons (weight loss) as opposed to real feelings about animal cruelty. In my opinion, it’s the circle of life…we were meant to use animals for nutrition. Do I believe animals are now treated inhumanely? Yes. Do I believe we should be buying organic, free range? Yes. Does it cost more moeny ? yes….is it worth it? absolutely.

  • It looks like you did well for vegan day! everything is delicious. I’m all about adding vegan meals to your life, but i dont think I’ll be 100% this month! even I’m starting to welcome back some animal products to my diet….. no meat yet though!

  • oh yea! Thanks for all the recipes. I want to try the squash and pb soup, YUM!!

  • Learn something new every day! I didn’t know there was a vegan day. Not shocking with all the other days, I guess, but good to know! I could certainly go vegan for a day, week, maybe even a month. But it wouldn’t be enjoyable for me. I think it’s great that some can adhere to such stringent restrictions, especially at restaurants, social gatherings, etc. I would find it really, really tough!

  • I had no idea that yesterday was World Vegan Day!

We try to cook a at least 1 – 2 vegan meals a week. I’ve tried brief stints of “going vegan” before, but inevitably feta cheese or cake batter ice cream call my name, and I just can’t resist :)

Your vegan recipes look fantastic! I’m absolutely bookmarking this page so I can return to them. Thanks for sharing :)

  • I remember doing a post about this last year….ah, how time flies. A whole year gone already! This is easy for me because I’m nearly vegan. My roommate made some awesome vegan creme brulee last night…it was so good! Vegan food can really often be superior in my opinion.
